Earthjustice: Associate Attorney Position (California Regional)

Earthjustice is seeking an associate attorney to join its California Regional Office. The attorney selected for this position will focus on litigation and other advocacy in our efforts to protect the invaluable natural resources of California, including public health, clean air, clean water, and healthy ecosystems. The associate attorney will serve in the California Regional Office, and may be located in either San Francisco or Los Angeles.

Responsibilities: The associate attorney may have primary responsibility for some matters, but will generally work collaboratively with other lawyers in the regional office.

• Conduct legal research and prepare memoranda on issues relating to ongoing or potential litigation.
• Draft motions, briefs, and other pleadings.
• Develop oral advocacy and presentation skills.
• Interact with clients and work with experts.
• Participate in communications strategies around litigation campaigns.

Qualifications: Applicants must be law-school graduates who are admitted or willing to apply for admission to the California bar.

• 0-6 years of legal experience, preferably with environmental law or general litigation experience.
• Excellent research and writing skills.
• Outstanding academic record.
• Initiative, good judgment, and a strong work ethic.
• Passion for the environment.
• Ability to work both independently and in collaboration with others.

The associate program is designed to help young attorneys develop into thoughtful, professional, and effective advocates skilled in the various aspects of public-interest litigation. Many associates have gone on to other positions within Earthjustice or with other conservation organizations. The term for this position is two to three years.
